Dedicated legal support for multi-academy trusts

One trust. Multiple schools. Consistent legal advice.

The growth of multi-academy trusts has brought greater responsibility for executive leaders, trustees and central management teams. Managing legal risk across several schools requires more than responding to individual problems. It demands consistent policies, clear governance arrangements and an understanding of how decisions at one academy may affect the wider trust. We work alongside trust leadership teams to provide coordinated legal advice across their organisation.

Legal support designed around the needs of your trust.

  1. Strategic HR and workforce management

Advice on trust-wide employment policies, restructuring, disciplinary procedures, senior leadership disputes, contractual arrangements and workforce transfers.

  2. Safeguarding and regulatory risk

Supporting trusts in managing sensitive allegations, regulatory referrals, internal investigations and the interaction between safeguarding and employment obligations.

  3. Governance and executive decision-making

Legal guidance for trustees, CEOs and executive teams on governance responsibilities, decision-making, procedural compliance and managing institutional risk.

  4. Dispute resolution and litigation

Representation in employment tribunal proceedings, contractual disputes, regulatory investigations and other contentious matters affecting individual academies or the wider trust.

  5. Consistent advice across the trust

We help central teams establish a coherent approach to recurring legal issues, reducing inconsistency and supporting confident decision-making across multiple settings.

Legal advice that understands education

Education law is rarely confined to a single issue.

A safeguarding allegation may trigger employment procedures, regulatory reporting obligations and a police investigation. A parental complaint may raise questions of discrimination, data protection and governance. A staffing restructure may involve contractual rights, consultation obligations and the operational requirements of several schools.

Our approach recognises these connections.

Rather than considering each issue in isolation, we help educational institutions understand the wider implications of their decisions and develop a coordinated response.

Our priorities are straightforward

  • Clarity: advice that identifies your legal position and the options available.
  • Practicality: solutions that work within the realities of education.
  • Risk management: identifying potential legal and regulatory consequences before they escalate.
  • Continuity: consistent legal support from initial advice through to resolution.
  • Discretion: sensitive matters handled with appropriate care and confidentiality.

Why choose our education law team?

Legal expertise with a practical understanding of education.

Education law rarely operates in isolation. A safeguarding allegation may involve employment procedures, regulatory reporting and a police investigation. A dispute involving a senior leader may raise contractual, governance and reputational concerns. A parental complaint may engage safeguarding, equality and confidentiality obligations. We understand how these issues overlap. Our multidisciplinary approach enables us to consider the wider implications of legal decisions rather than addressing each issue in isolation.

  1. Direct access to experienced practitioners

Clear, responsive advice from legal professionals who understand the importance of timely decisions.

  2. Practical and commercially focused

We consider not only the legal position but also the financial, operational and reputational consequences for your institution.

  3. Joined-up legal expertise

Our experience across employment law, litigation, regulatory matters and criminal defence provides valuable support when different legal processes intersect.

  4. Proportionate solutions

We focus on resolving disputes effectively, avoiding unnecessary escalation and litigation wherever appropriate.

  5. Continuity and understanding

We value long-term professional relationships, developing an understanding of each institution’s priorities and the challenges facing its leadership.

Ongoing legal support for schools and academy trusts

Advice when you need it. Confidence when it matters.

Not every legal issue requires formal proceedings. Often, timely advice at an early stage can prevent a manageable concern from developing into a costly dispute.

We recognise that schools and trusts benefit from having access to legal professionals who understand their organisation, policies and operational priorities.

Alongside instructions on individual matters, we can discuss tailored arrangements for institutions seeking regular legal support.

Depending on the agreed scope, these may include

  • Access to employment and regulatory legal advice
  • Guidance on disciplinary, grievance and capability procedures
  • Review of contracts, policies and correspondence
  • Support with safeguarding-related employment issues
  • Advice on complaints and internal investigations
  • Assistance with settlement agreements and negotiations
  • Strategic guidance on managing recurring legal risks

Our aim is to provide continuity, consistency and clear advice without unnecessary complexity.

Expert advice. Quick solutions. Predictable costs.

We understand that schools and academy trusts often need immediate, practical legal guidance without the delay or expense of formally instructing solicitors on every occasion. Our competitively priced legal retainer packages are designed to give education leaders direct access to experienced legal professionals, providing timely advice and practical solutions to everyday challenges before they escalate into costly disputes. Whether dealing with a staffing concern, safeguarding allegation, parental complaint or governance issue, our team can provide clear, actionable guidance when it matters most. How we work with schools and trusts

A panelled courtroom
  1. Understand your position

We take time to understand the issue, your institution’s circumstances and the outcome you are seeking. We identify the relevant legal obligations and any immediate risks.

  2. Develop a clear strategy

We explain your options, recommend a practical course of action and help you plan the next steps, taking account of safeguarding, employment, governance and operational considerations.

  3. Support implementation

Whether drafting correspondence, reviewing policies, advising on investigations, negotiating settlements or providing representation, we remain involved as the matter progresses.

  4. Protect your institution’s interests

Our aim is not simply to resolve the immediate issue, but to help you make decisions that are legally sound, proportionate and sustainable.

Alongside our work with educational institutions, we provide independent legal representation to teachers, school leaders, lecturers, support staff, students and parents.

We understand the significant professional and personal consequences these matters can carry and provide confidential, carefully considered advice throughout.

Experience beyond the classroom

Our firm’s experience extends across employment, litigation, safeguarding-related matters, regulatory investigations and criminal law. Our firm’s experience extends beyond conventional employment and education disputes to matters attracting regulatory scrutiny, public interest and national media attention.

Director Attiq Malik has contributed to national discussions concerning the Prevent duty in schools, including an appearance on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme. The firm’s involvement in matters concerning Prevent referrals involving young children has also been reported by The Guardian.

This experience provides valuable insight into the relationship between safeguarding responsibilities, individual rights, regulatory scrutiny and the decisions educational institutions must make when faced with sensitive issues. This experience provides an important perspective on the legal and practical challenges arising when safeguarding responsibilities, institutional decision-making and individual rights intersect.

We bring that understanding to our work with educational institutions, helping leaders approach sensitive issues with confidence, discretion and sound legal judgement.

We understand that effective legal advice is not simply about knowing the law. It is about applying it with sound judgement, discretion and an appreciation of the wider consequences.

I could not recommend this firm enough. They manage to maintain complete professionalism whilst also being personable. Rasheda and Dean clearly explained every step of the process from beginning to end, with Dean taking the time to explain all of legal jargon. I really appreciated this as it made, what started as a daunting experience, so much easier to complete. I am so glad that I took the time to look around and read reviews before choosing any local firm. It really made a difference. Thank you Liberty Law.

Liberty Law took over my case at its hardest point. Dean Garrett was calm, straight-talking and on top of every detail from the first call: he strengthened my case, instructed an outstanding barrister, and his judgement was right at every turn. Rasheda kept everything running smoothly behind the scenes — calls arranged, documents where they needed to be, nothing ever too much trouble. My case concluded on day two of the final hearing, with an outcome I was very pleased with. They believed in my case when it mattered, and they delivered. Highly recommended.

Questions people ask

Do you act for schools or for staff?

Both. We act for schools, academy trusts, colleges and universities, and for teachers, staff, students and parents — but never for both sides of the same matter. We check for conflicts before we take anything on.

A teacher has been accused of something at school. What happens next?

In England, allegations against staff in schools and colleges are handled under the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education, usually with the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO). The police may also investigate. Early advice helps keep the process fair for everyone involved.

Will I be suspended?

Not automatically. The guidance says suspension should not be the default response and that alternatives should be considered first. If you have been suspended, or asked to a meeting, speak to us before you attend.

What is the Teaching Regulation Agency?

The Teaching Regulation Agency investigates serious misconduct by teachers in England. A panel can recommend a prohibition order, which stops someone from teaching. We advise and represent teachers through the process.

What is a Prevent referral?

Prevent is part of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy. Schools, colleges and universities must have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. A referral is not an accusation of a crime, but it can feel like one — we advise families and institutions on how referrals are made and handled.

Will the police get involved?

If an allegation could amount to a criminal offence, they may. Anyone asked to attend a police interview is entitled to free legal advice. Call our 24-hour line on 01582 853 783 before you go.

Nothing on this page is legal advice, and no solicitor–client relationship is created by reading it. Every case turns on its own facts.
