Questions

Questions people ask at two in the morning

General information, not advice on your case. For that, call the line — the first conversation costs nothing.

Arrests, interviews and charges

Do I have to answer police questions?

You do not have to answer questions, but the caution warns that staying silent can be held against you later. Whether to answer, and how, depends entirely on what the police have disclosed — which is why that decision should not be made without a solicitor in the room. Advice at the police station is free to you.

Will I get legal aid?

Advice and representation at the police station is free to everyone, regardless of income. For cases that go to court, legal aid depends on your means and on the seriousness of the charge. We check your eligibility at the first call and tell you straight away.

I have been asked to attend a voluntary interview. Is that serious?

Yes. A voluntary interview carries the same caution and the same consequences as one after arrest — the only difference is that you are not in custody. Anything you say can be used in exactly the same way, so take a solicitor with you.

How quickly can you reach me?

The 24-hour line is answered by a solicitor, not a call centre. We attend police stations across England and Wales, through the night, at weekends and over bank holidays.

What happens if I am charged?

You will be given a date at the magistrates’ court, usually quickly. Between now and then there is work to be done on disclosure and evidence, and that early period often matters more than the hearing itself.

Do you only take criminal cases?

No. We focus on criminal law, road traffic law, employment law and settlement agreements, and we do not take work outside them.

Questions about fees

How do you charge for your services?

We charge using a combination of hourly rates, fixed fees and conditional fee agreements. We are transparent about our pricing and make sure you understand our fee structure.

Are there any hidden fees or charges?

No. We are committed to transparent pricing: we discuss all costs upfront and give a detailed breakdown of fees and disbursements.

What is a Conditional Fee Agreement (CFA)?

A CFA, also known as a “no win, no fee” agreement, is a fee arrangement where the client only pays the solicitor’s fees if the case is successful. If the case is unsuccessful, the client does not pay those fees.

What are disbursements?

Disbursements are costs paid by the solicitor on the client’s behalf, such as court fees, barristers’ fees and expert witness fees. They are separate from the solicitor’s fees and are typically required in legal proceedings.

How are hourly rates set?

Hourly rates depend on the experience of the solicitor handling your case — the more experienced the solicitor, the higher the hourly rate.

Can you estimate the total cost before starting?

Yes. We can estimate the total costs of your case, based on its complexity and the likely amount of work. The actual costs may vary with the specifics of the case.

How do fixed fees work?

A fixed fee is a set amount for a specific legal service. It is agreed before work starts and stays the same regardless of the time spent on the matter.

Can I have a breakdown of fees and disbursements?

Yes. We give our clients a detailed breakdown of fees and disbursements, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

Say nothing until we are sitting beside you. Before you answer anything, call us. You should not face that interview alone. Do not go in there without a solicitor. Two in the morning is when we work hardest. You reach a solicitor, not a call centre.

The first conversation is free, confidential, and privileged from the first word. We attend police stations across England and Wales, day and night.
